Registering to vote

In order to register to vote, or to register at a new address if you have moved, print this voter registration application and mail it to the local voter registrar. The deadline to register to vote is 22 days before election day. The addresses are:

City of Richmond: General Registrar, PO Box 61037, Richmond, VA 23261

Chesterfield County: General Registrar, PO Box 1690, Chesterfield, VA 23832

Be sure to register at least 22 days before election day to vote in any upcoming election. If you live in another county or city, the general registrar’s office for other jurisdictions are found on the back of the instruction sheet of the registration form. If you would like to check your registration status you can do so here on the State Board of Elections website here.

Obtaining an absentee ballot

In order to obtain an absentee ballot you need to mail in an application. Print this request form. Follow the instructions carefully and request a form as soon as you know you will not be able to vote in person. Absentee ballot applications must be received the Tuesday before any election day. All absentee ballots must arrive by 7:00pm on election day. If you are eligible to request an absentee ballot, it is also possible to vote absentee in person at the General Registrar’s office of your county or city. The last day to vote absentee in person is the Saturday before election day.
